The April 19th tour to Jacques Littlefield's military vehicle museum was definitely more of a testosterone-laden tour than usual. Only 5 females were in our group of over 30 for this oddly poignant tour. After meeting at Rancho late in the chilly morning, we followed tour leader Mark Edwards through the back roads of Los Altos Hills before tackling the steeper terrain as we neared our destination. The group met our tour guide, Michael Green, at the restoration shop where a WWII German Panther tank is the center of attraction, aside from the jaw-dropping restoration shop itself. Michael Green is a prolific military equipment author, and his love and knowledge of these mega-machines communicated well to his audience. We toured four immense buildings of military vehicles and heard story after story about the military history of the United States and other countries. It was very touching and somewhat disturbing (personal opinion inserted here). An important part of history is being restored and preserved here and we are fortunate to have it so close and available to learn from. After reluctantly leaving Pony Tracks Ranch, most headed home, with a few diehards heading back to Los Altos and ice cream on this cold, blustery day. Many thanks to Mark and Bob Edwards for organizing this tour!Barbara McKenzie |
