June 12, 2011. In early May, it looked
like it was going to be a light year for entries in the Endurance Run and
the Lowland Tour.. We began to think maybe 20 speedsters and 25 Lowland
entries would be about it. Boy, were we fooled. We ended up with 37
speedsters registered, and 35 actually hit the road, and the final
count on the Lowland Tour was 55 cars. The start was moved back to the
Agnews location this year so we had a start on a tree-lined street instead
of a tall building lined street. We covered a lot of ground on the
speedster run, from Agnews to Skyline to the ocean to Skyline to Redwood
City for lunch to Niles to Sunol to Calveras to Sierra Road to the finish
on Laurelwood in Santa Clara. We had overcast skies to start with, some
fog and mist up on Skyline, lots of bicycles everywhere and a beautiful
sunny afternoon. 28 speedsters completed the full run. We lost 3 to
mechanical problems, 2 did not make it to the starting line and 4 bypassed
checkpoint #3.
The Lowland cars had an easy flatland
tour from Santa Clara to Redwood City and back. I did hear that the loop
through the Stanford Campus got tangled up with Stanford graduation.
I must say the lunch at Towne Ford in Redwood City was one fine feast,
tri-tip, sausages, vegetables, beans, salad, rolls and fresh baked cookies
right out of the oven. We all needed a nap after that. It was a great day,
we all had fun, and are already looking forward to next year.
