What is it about Garden Railroads that attracts us? Well, you didn't think we were going to answer that question, did you?The South County Railroaders invited our Model T Club to visit their 13th annual open house on Saturday, August 9th. Five Model T's, one 1932 Chevrolet, and 3 moderns caravanned down to Morgan Hill and Gilroy on a beautiful sunny day to enjoy these backyard spectacles. At the first Garden Railroad Stop we enjoyed the display of trains, miniature houses, people & pets in the backyard display, while the owners of the railroad went out front and enjoyed our antique cars. At the second Garden Railroad Stop, we not only enjoyed the railroad display, but also the backyard with a swimming pool, hot tub, BBQ set-up, shade trees, and comfy places to sit. We were reluctant to leave. After a lunch stop in Gilroy, we went on to the third Garden Railroad Stop. Steve Gulko remarked that the displays seemed to be getting better at each stop, and we think he was right. The fourth and final stop was at the Grass Farms Garden Accents where they had a miniature train set-up that circled a pond. There were lots of nice plants, flowers, trees, statues, and anything else one needed for a garden. Inside the showroom was a cat sleeping in a decorative sink and we couldn't tell if it was a statue or if it was real until it finally opened its eyes.Refreshments were offered at each of the stops and the owners of the backyard displays were friendly and talkative. Garden Railroaders are as passionate and proud of their hobby of backyard railroads as we are of our Model T's.Lucy & Allan Greenberg |
