Antique Autos in History Park began in 2000 as a destination tour to History Park (Kelley Park in San Jose) by the Santa Clara Valley Model T Ford Club members driving 12 antique cars. This year, the 6th annual AAHP has grown into one of the major events of the SCVMTFC with the participation of around 20 antique car clubs plus individual antique car owners. A total of over 140 antique autos lined the Park streets and were complimented by antique fire equipment, antique motorcycles, bicycles and boats. This year saw the added attraction of a motor-powered glider belonging to the Wings of History Museum of San Martin. As in previous years, the Early Day Gas and Tractor Association filled the grounds with their equipment, all of which popped and hissed to the delight of the on-lookers.Back by popular demand was the South Bay Stompers Dixieland Band which entertained the crowd from 1:00 to 3:00 pm. In the Hotel conference room, olden-day movies with Laurel and Hardy and Henry Ford's "Race of the Century" were shown. The young were kept busy disassembling and assembling lawn mower engines, building wooden race cars and putting out imaginary fires. And in the blacksmith shop, the blacksmiths were heating up and pounding out olden day objects. Food was amply provided by Peggy Sue's Restaurant and O'Briens. This year as an added attraction, hand crafts that were practiced in the early 1900s, were displayed and demonstrated on the ground floor of the firehouse. There were glass sculpturing, clay working, auto art, water coloring, painting, quilting, wood carving, beading, lace making and silk organza rose making. We often observed people who strolled the streets in their early 1900s finery. And in addition to the admiration of the visitors to the Park, some were rewarded with a certificate of appreciation. We would like to express our appreciation to everyone who participated in this event. We would also like to thank all of you who assisted on Sunday. And to all the visitors to the Park, we thank you for coming out and sharing the afternoon with us. You all have given us the courage to put this event on again next year.Allan & Lucy Greenberg |
